Defense Filters for Robust Learning of Partially Observed Dynamical Systems

Spotting lies in sensor data when someone's attacking half the time

Researchers developed a defense filter that can reliably identify how a system works even when an adversary is poisoning up to 50% of the incoming sensor data. The method works by using knowledge of which sensors you have to construct a mathematical filter that separates legitimate signals from attacks, then recovering the system's behavior with proven accuracy guarantees — a first for systems operating under this level of attack.

Power grids, autonomous vehicles, and industrial control systems all rely on learning accurate models from sensor data. When adversaries can corrupt half the measurements, traditional estimation fails. This work enables critical infrastructure to maintain reliable operations even under coordinated cyberattacks where attackers compromise many data points, making real-world deployments far safer.
