EndoWake: Modeling Wind by Linear Programming for Wind Farm Layout Optimization

A smarter math approach to placing wind turbines for maximum power

Researchers developed a new mathematical method that treats wind speed as something to be optimized rather than simply calculated, allowing them to embed the complex physics of how turbines interfere with each other directly into a computer optimization program. This approach uses linear equations instead of the usual complicated nonlinear ones, making it possible to find genuinely optimal turbine layouts much faster than existing methods.

Wind farms are expensive to build, and even small improvements in turbine placement translate directly to more electricity generated over decades of operation. This method solves a problem that has frustrated engineers for years — previous approaches either simplified the physics too much or were too computationally slow to handle real-world-sized farms. Faster, more accurate optimization means developers can test more layout possibilities and choose designs that produce measurably more power from the same land area.
