Fuji: The Shape, Composition, and Spread of Demand Bursts on Robinhood Chain

What happens when everyone trades at once on blockchain markets

Demand on blockchain trading platforms arrives in sudden, intense bursts that are 2.5 times normal traffic at their peak. By analyzing three months of trading data on Robinhood Chain, researchers found that during these bursts, traders hit about 40% more trades across roughly the same pools, with each surge following a predictable two-part pattern: a slow buildup over hours followed by a sharp drop over minutes.

Blockchain platforms sell access to their network through "gas" fees that fluctuate with demand. Understanding what drives these traffic spikes—whether traders are copying each other or responding to the same news—could help platforms better predict congestion, set fairer prices, and prevent the bottlenecks that currently freeze trading during busy periods. Currently, platforms focus on pricing gas during peaks without understanding what's actually causing the demand itself.
