Goal-Oriented Wave Computing for Direction-of-Arrival Estimation
Smart surfaces that find signal direction with simpler designs
Programmable metasurfaces—electronically tunable antenna arrays—can estimate where a radio signal is coming from by processing waves as they pass through them. By training these surfaces directly for the task rather than fitting them to a generic mathematical operation first, researchers showed that simpler, cheaper designs perform just as well, even when the control system uses only 1–3 bits of precision.
Metasurfaces are emerging components for next-generation wireless systems, radar, and sensing. Using fewer elements, shallower designs, and coarser control reduces manufacturing cost and power consumption while maintaining performance—making practical deployment of wave-based computing in phones, base stations, and autonomous systems more feasible.
