Learning to Steer LLM Agents and Multi-Agent Systems
Teaching AI agents to recognize and correct their own mistakes mid-task
AI systems that use tools and work together often drift from their goals as tasks unfold, wasting time and producing wrong answers. Researchers built a "steering agent" that watches execution in real time, deciding when and how to intervene and redirect the system back on track — and showed it improves performance for both single and multi-agent systems while generalizing to new tasks and different executors.
As AI systems tackle longer and more complex tasks, goal drift wastes computational resources and produces unreliable results. A system that catches and corrects these errors on the fly could make AI agents far more efficient and trustworthy in real-world applications like research, planning, and decision-making — especially in multi-agent setups where errors compound across teams.
