Low-Bit N-Gram Embeddings for Language Models

Shrinking the memory hog inside modern AI language models by 75%

Language models increasingly use lookup tables to store short token sequences, but these tables consume enormous amounts of memory—196 billion parameters in one recent model. Researchers found that storing these tables at lower precision (4 bits instead of full precision) cuts their memory use by roughly 75% while keeping nearly all of the performance benefit, and that the saved memory can be reinvested to actually improve the model beyond its original version.

Language models are getting larger and harder to run on real hardware. Cutting n-gram table memory by three-quarters makes these models cheaper to deploy and faster to run, with little to no loss in quality—and the researchers showed the trick works on already-released commercial models like DeepSeek and Qwen. This could make cutting-edge AI more accessible to smaller companies and researchers who can't afford massive computing budgets.
