Researchers created RTLViT, a lightweight AI system that reconstructs clear images from the blurry patterns captured by lensless cameras — devices with no traditional lens that are far simpler and smaller than regular cameras. The system works 15 times faster than larger AI approaches while actually producing better images, and it runs directly on smartphones and laptops in real time.
Lensless cameras could be built directly into phones and other devices since they need no bulky lens, but only if the image reconstruction can happen instantly without draining the battery. RTLViT makes this practical by doing the job with minimal computation, opening the path to thinner phones, better hidden cameras for security systems, and ultra-compact imaging for medical or scientific devices.
